White Abarrio Prevails in the $6 Million Classic!

With all of the best 3-year olds, Mage, Arcangelo and National Treasure opting for the Dirt Mile, White Abarrio showed that he is truly the best older Dirt horse of 2023 with his win in the $6 Million Classic. He now has won 3 of 5 races this year including the G1 Whitney Stakes by 6 1/4 lengths since joing the Richard Dutrow barn whom had just returned from a 10-year training ban earlier this year. White Abarrio (5/2) was given a perfect ride by Irad Ortiz, Jr. as he was placed in 3rd behind the two early speed runners Arabian Knight (7/2) and Saudi Crown (7-1). They set the pace and battled each other around the track until Saudi Crown began to drop back leaving the 2nd turn as Arabian Knight continued on the lead to the final Furlong where he began to drop back as White Abarrio moved to the front after trailing the pace setters in 3rd. At the same time as White Abarrio took the lead, Derma Sotogake (Jpn) (26-1) also moved up from his stalking position in 4th to challenge the new leader to no avail as he finished 2nd just 1 length behind the winner and a 1 1/4 lengths in front of the closing Proxy (17-1) who had to go 8 wide coming out of the final turn as he got up to finish in 4th a Neck in front of the pace setter Arabian Knight! Final time for the 1 1/4 Miles was 2:02 4/5.
In the (7) Turf races the Americans only won (2) with the Euro invaders winning (5). In the Juvenile Turf Sprint Div. the Euros ran 1-2-3 with the $1 Trifecta paying $1,378 and in the Juvenile Turf Div. the Aidan O'Brien runners ran 1-2! Of the 21 Trifecta positions in the (7) Turf Divisions, the Euros took down 12 of them.
In the (14) Divisions, there were (8) winning Favorites!
The Average Win payout was a LOW $11.37 for a $2 wager.
Average $2 Exacta only paid $100 with the $1 Trifecta paying $417 and the $1 Superfecta averaged only $3,099. The prices on the payouts this year were about 50% lower than last year because of how many Favorites won.
The biggest upset in a Breeders' Cup races occurred in the Juvenile Division when Fierceness UPSET the field at 16-1 Odds and paid $35.00 for the $2 Win wager and the $1 Superfecta paid a low $1,097. It was not a good weekend for the home track trainers as only 2 horses could finish in the Trifecta from 33 entries in the 14 Divisions! The two that hit the board were both trained by Bob Baffert, Muth in the Juvenile and National Treasure in the Dirt Mile. They both ran 2nd. Of the (4) returning champions attempting to defend their title, only Caravel (Turf Sprint) was not successful.
