Congrats to National Treasure in Winning the Preakness!

Getting a perfect ride from John Velazquez, National Treasure was quick from the gate and put on the lead as Coffeewithchris (10-1) chased him in close pursuit as Blazing Sevens (5-1) and the Kentucky Derby winner Mage (7/5) followed close by.
Johnny V. was able to slow the pace down as he maintained the lead, getting the first 1/2 mile in :48 4/5 while maintaining a 1 1/3 length lead over Coffeewithchris.
Just one length further behind was Blazing Sevens, Mage and Red Route One. Then Irad Ortiz, Jr. started to make his move on the leader at the 3/4 pole and thus began their epic battle through the stretch that ended with National Treasure winning by a Head. The favorite and Kentucky Derby winner Mage finished in 3rd another 2 1/4 lengths back with Red Route One another 2 1/2 lengths back in 4th!
Trained by Bob Baffert, National Treasure provided him with his record setting 8th win in the Preakness Stakes. The victory also gave jockey John Velazquez his first win in the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown Series.
With the Scratch of First Mission who was the 2nd Favorite on the morning line, it gave National Treasure the option of being the controlling speed and if he could keep the early pace reasonable he would be in position to win the race at the end. Being trained by Baffert it was insured that he would be on the front end and they would have come and catch him!
Trainer Chad Brown was attempting to win the Preakness for the 3rd time in 6 years with a runner, Blazing Sevens, that skipped the Kentucky Derby to run in the Preakness Stakes even though they had enough points to qualify for the KY Derby.
The $150,000 supplemented runner, Perform (8-1) did not get his money back as he only finished 6th with $0.00 purse money. He was never really involved in the race and had no speed. Bad investment for the owners.
Final time of the race was 1:55 1/5 with the final 1/4 mile the quickest in 35 years.
Payouts were on the low side with the top 3 favorites running in the superfecta.
Current plans are for National Treasure to run in the Belmont Stakes.

We felt that Mage would not win the race after his big effort in winning the Kentucky Derby even though he was the only Derby runner showing up in Baltimore. With his limited racing experience combined with the short 2 week turn around, that it would just be too much to ask for him to take down the 2nd Leg of the Triple Crown Series.
Our pick to win the race was First Mission even though he too had limited racing experience, we did like the way he won the Lexington S. as well as his tactical speed ability. He had two recent Bullet works that showed he was ready to put in a top performance. He had also earned a Bris last out 100+ Late pace number.
Unfortunately he was Scratched from the race due to a foot/ankel injury.
As a result National Treasure became our top pick as he was originally our pick for second.
In our picks we used (1) A, (2) B and (3) C runnerss along with (2) SC horses to use in the case of any scratches.
Our original Picks (before any scratches) had First Mission as our A1, National Treasure, and Mage as our B1 and B2 and Blazing Sevens, Perform and Red Route One as our C1-3 runners and Chase the Chaos and Coffeewithchris as our SC hores to use when any scratches occur.
When they do happen our wagering strategy is to move all runners up to fill in where thw scratch occurred and add our SC runners to the bottom.

The race was run just as we thought with National Treasure going straight to the lead and taking them as far as he could. He was able to win the race going wire-to-wire and holding off Blazing Sevens by just a Head! Once again a "New Shooter" prevailed over the Kentucky Derby winner.
Kentucky Derby winners have not been winning the Preakness Stakes in recent years as they only won 5 times in the last 14 years.
They do however finish in the Superfecta over 85% of the time which is just one of the main reasons why we did not pick Mage to win but did keep him in our Exacta, Trifecta and Superfecta wagers.
The same holds true for Preakness Stakes Favorites as they have only won 3 of the last 13 editions but have only been out of the Superfecta 2 times in 13 years.
In our wagering strategy we suggested playing a Superfecta Keying National Treasure on Top of our B and C selections.
